I got many ideas from the book “Show your work” but, clearly, the one that resonated the most was creating my personal website: an online space where I can share all my content (like this post!) and, hopefully, improving my online presence on the process. So, after having published this website, I wanted to share with you some of my thoughts on this topic.
Is it necessary to have a personal website?
While some people would argue that having a personal website is not strictly necessary, I could easily argue against: we have entered the digital era and, like it or not, the world runs more on the internet than outside of it.
Of course, answering whether it's necessary or not may drastically vary depending on the conditions for each individual (profession, age, etc.) and his specific goals and needs. If you are content with using social media or other online platforms to share your work and connect with others, a personal website may not be necessary.
However, if you want more control over your online identity and a unique space to share your thoughts and creations, a personal website can be a valuable asset. Also, in these times we are living not being present online is close to non-existing at all, and while this is not mandatory, I would recommend you to taking it into account considering its benefit/cost radio: owning a domain is not expensive anymore (I’ve paid 45,62€ for 5 years owning hugocorta.com) and there are thousands of no-code options out there that may help you to publish.
Reasons to have a personal online space
Nonetheless, in case you’re doubting about having your personal space online or not, here are some important reasons for me to convince you on building your own unique corner of the internet.
Control over your online identity
Having your own controlled space where you can truly express yourself is very important. A personal website allows you to create a unique online space that is all your own. You can share your thoughts, ideas, and creations with the world in a way that is uniquely you.
With a personal website, you have greater flexibility in terms of what you can share and how you can share it: you have complete control over the content and design of your digital space. This allows you to showcase yourself in a way that is authentic and represents you accurately.
Within there you’re not restricted by any condition or policy rules as in other platforms. You fully control your content as well as how it’s presented. Therefore, it’s the most personal way to really introduce yourself online.
Improve online presence
Think how difficult for a person looking for you is to find out about you on the Internet. A personal website increase your visibility online and make it easier for people to find and learn more about you and your work.
A personal website help establish credibility and professionalism, particularly if you are an artist, writer, or small business owner. It shows that you are serious about your work and willing to invest in your online presence. It can also serve as a hub for your online presence, and can be a great way to connect with others in your field or industry.
Setting up your own website allows you to showcase your work and provide proof about your abilities. This is a must if you are in one of the creative fields such as writing, designing, art, music, etc. While you can list out your skills on your resume, having a portfolio lets people see exactly what you do.
Takeaway
These days, creating a personal website is pretty easy. You don’t need to know about web hosting or code. You don’t even have to have tons of content — just one landing page is all you need to stake out your spot on the web.
Of course, it will depend on the case but, given the return of investment that generates having a personal space, I think is very difficult to argue against it.
I’d like to finish with this quote, a personal reinterpretation for this case base on a famous statement from Brian Foote and Joseph Yoder:
“If you think having a personal website is expensive, try not having one.”
